Many of the problems people experience with mathematics are connected to the basic building blocks of the subject. We don’t spend enough time making sure we fully understand the basics before trying to learn the next skill. It’s like trying to build a house straight onto sand, instead of first building a foundation. The house is not going to hold fast. Likewise we can’t expect our mathematics education to stand us in good stead if we go about it the wrong way.
At Master Maths, we spend time determining a learner’s problem areas, so we can fix them. This will help learners to understand their current and future work. If learners join our centres at a young age, we help them build their skills and understanding, minimizing the chances of developing problem areas.
What’s happening in this lesson: Polygons, Triangles and Quadrilaterals – a module for Grades 7-9 CAPS and IGCSE
We’d like to share one of our lessons with you, to show you how our system works. In South Africa, Grade 4-6 learners are introduced to basic 2 dimensional shapes. In Grades 7-9, far more is introduced. Learners have to have extensive knowledge of different types of 2 dimensional shapes, and their properties, such as polygons, triangles and quadrilaterals by the end of Grade 9. This module shows something of what is expected from them at this point.
Learners in the lower grades will need to cover this module, in order to understand the work they’re required to know. However, it is also useful for learners in higher grades to revisit this work, as this knowledge is applied in Grades 10-12 in trigonometry, analytical geometry and euclidean geometry. Without knowledge of types of triangles, polygons and quadrilaterals, Grade 10-12 learners will not be able to understand or answer questions in geometry or trigonometry.
